Malifaux - Relic Hunters Crew

As a step into Malifaux, I bought the Relic Hunters Crew Starter Set...

I went for a basing, which emphasised the treasure hunting nature of the crew. The slate I used came from an old engraved garden thermometer, which I smashed up with a hammer. This gave me flat pieces that were inscribed with curved patterns, suggestive of the magical designs of Malifaux.  I finished the bases together, to ensure they matched as I have a tendency to make up basing as I go.

The Relic Hunters

I've also finished one of the Wastrels... I was pretty pleased with the dragon tattoo on the back of his head. I'm fairly confident that I might actually finish this crew. I'm not allowed to buy any more models until I finish either the Relic Hunters or the Norse Blood Bowl team.

Pretty happy with it, but the gore on the chains looks much better in reality!

And now for something completely different...

Well, not quite, but close enough - Malifaux

Malifaux has intrigued me for a while and despite the 2nd Edition haters out there, I thought I'd get a set. I dipped my toe a while back with the Through the Breach (TtB) RPG and can't say I've been that impressed with Wyrd as a result. The RPG itself (or at least the PDF version) is top notch (particularly the character creation), but the kickstarter itself was a shambles, still I held on and await the physical goodies with baited breath.

Anyway, I've been bored with Games Workshop for so long I finally took the plunge on the game itself...

I went for these bits from The Troll Trader (very quick delivery and really well packaged - will definitely go back). The Malifaux rulebook is a snip, as long as you don't need the fluff - for me Through the Breach fills that whole and I'll get the big book later. The old school fate deck, was just a cool little extra and I'm getting a second with the TtB (when it finally gets here!).

The final bit, was the Relic Hunters (Lucas McCabe) starter set. I thought long and hard about which set to get and this just beat the Lady Justice Set and the Rail Crew (both will be added at some point I'm sure). What sealed it was the lovely models and the dual nature of Lucas McCabe, allowing me to choose between the Ten Thunders and the Guild. I hope to add the Guild Riflemen and Death Marshalls at some point, but need to investigate the models that have the best synergy.

I also broke out the Malifaux buildings from WorldWorksGames, which I got for Christmas about two years ago.

A single set goes a long way - I may get some more soon

Great Interiors and Highly Modular - Perfect for RPGs
They are lovely, but the terraclips don't go very far, I may get some more to fill a 3x3 board.

Next up... Lucas McCabe and Co.

Blood Bowl Norse!

Been a while, so here's a few updates, starting with a new Blood Bowl team...

Boris Johanson Runner #1

I was happy with the skin (I hate painting skin, but I need to learn) and I love the giant wings on his head. The colour scheme was originally going to be blue and white, but it seems almost every Norse team has that scheme, so I went with the Purple People Eaters instead.

And the rest of the team...

They are pretty classic Marauder based Norse conversions, with a werewolf themed big guy, courtesy of Mierce Miniatures awesome creations (looking forward to getting him painted up!) and Willy Miniatures Werewolves (Ulfwerener) - top heavy, but the best BB Werewolves I've seen...

The Marauder miniatures are getting old (horrid mouldlines, bobble heads etc), but are still the best option for creating a Norse team at the minimum cost (plus I got extras for a Chaos Pact team too!). To get in the mood I just purchased Rumble in the Jungle from Ebay, so expect an Amazon team to be next.

Blood Bowl Skaven!

Along with the Mordheim warband, I've been tinkering with a Skaven Blood Bowl Team - the Cripple Peak Cutters. The line up for the TV1000 is fairly standard at...

4 Gutter Runners
2 Blitzers
1 Thrower
4 Linerats
and some re-rolls

Here is Mirk Warpfang of the Cripple Peak Cutters...

Mordheim Skaven

Just a quick one, with a few pics...

Here is the start of my Mordheim Skaven Warband Hidden Eshin, Weeping Claw

The fledgling warband: Assassin adept, black skaven, gutter runners and Threek Twintail (standard bearer)

A close up on my Assassin

Some bases for Mordheim (Skaven and possibly a human warband too)

My Eshin Sorcerer (for a painting competition)

The warp lightning effect is made from crushed metal grid, which is twisted into shape. It is heavy and this means you need to counterbalance the model (hence the slate 'steps').

A little card update

I've been working on the back page of the cards and came up with this... It will have a summary of the starting skills/special rules and the basic starting equipment. I'm going to finish the IG and then look at the inquisition, chaos cultists and orks.

Competition Time!

I visited my local Games Workshop last weekend to pick up a couple of boxes of Tempestus Scions. Great kits with a ton of options, my only gripes are...

  1. As a converter is how they are not easily compatible with the current IG line, meaning kitbashing is a more challenging prospect.
  2. Some of the parts are less flexible and there aren't enough variations in the kit (lots of heads and such, but not a great deal of variety in the hands and poses).
While there the manager mentioned the single figure painting competition. I thought I'd take a punt and do an Inquisitorial Stormtrooper. It's based off the scions kit with a forgeworld cadian environment suit for the torso. Simple conversion, but fun to paint. Here is the work in progress...

More work to do on the plasma gun and the OSL on the weapon

I also plan on a fantasy miniature, so I picked up a Skaven Clanrats box from my FLGS too (no paint yet)...

A Little Update

I've been working on the Imperial Guard Cards for the Skirmish Game. Here are the cards I have so far for the Guard:

Alvin P Brodingnagian - Ogryn of the 95th Varangian Regiment (Ex-medical Orderly)

  • Whiteshield
  • Guardsman
  • Veteran
  • Heavy Weapon Specialist
  • Sergeant
  • Officer
  • Ogryn
  • Ratling Sniper
  • Demolition Expert
  • Commissar
  • Medic
  • PDF Militia

You can have any mix of these cards up to the cost limit for the start up squad  up to the max limit for the squad as a whole (currently 17 fighters). The money available for the starting squad is currently 750 Thrones, for fighters, extra upgrade equipment/skills (currently it costs 100 Thrones to upgrade to Catachan Jungle Fighters for example) and any mercenary additions - this will get you around 9 basic guardsmen with almost no upgrades, so I need to look at the numbers carefully.

You can assign any squad member as the leader, so you could have a Commissar and his Guard Veteran sidekick leading a group of Whiteshield Guardsmen behind enemy lines

  • 1 Commissar, 1 Veteran and 6 Whiteshields = 682 Thrones before upgrades

Or... go for a specialist 'Commando' team made up of a mix of IG Vets, with a Ratling, Ogryn, Demo Expert, Medic, led by an experienced officer.

  • 1 Officer, 1 Ogryn, 1 Ratling, 1 Demolition Expert, 1 Medic and 1 Veteran = 683 Thrones before upgrades

I want to keep it as open as possible, but prevent the cheese factor.

The beginnings of Ordo Chronus - A Skirmish Blog

Right...

I'm Laney and this is my attempt at tracking my progress on creating a comprehensive Warhammer 40k Skirmish, drawing on influences from Inq28 and elsewhere.

40k Skirmish
I plan on creating many of the squads not currently supported by the superb deathsquadsgame (which is my starting point). The idea being that I can make it more flexible (though balance may be something of an afterthought I will try my best!) - so I can create the squads/units/cadres I envisage in the Grimdark world of 40k.

Here are a couple of my early efforts...

The Varangian 10th/95th Major Helios Jones and Command

Sanctioned Psyker and Sniper of the 10th/95th

Allansian 2nd Battalian - The Bulldogs

The Cards:
To make the game flexible and allow infinite numbers of builds, I'm using separate unit cards. Here are a few rough drafts - tell me what you think...
Sample Cards

Imperial Guard Veteran Card

Deathwatch Marine Sergeant Card
The idea is that the unit progresses and you add the revised values to the cards during the campaign.

Future Plans:
I also hope to eventually create a game of my own with similar elements to it, but set in an Alternate Cold War 1960s Universe, with M.O.D. Arcane Agents and members of the SOE Experimental Division, battling the supernatural entities of the Unseelie Court, the engineered super agents of the Soviet Bloc and the insidious underworld gangs of the Vitruvian Society. More on that later...
